WELCOME TO CALUM MACLEAN

We are excited to announce that Calum Maclean has joined Horsfield Menzies as an Associate in the Employment team. I managed to sit down and ask him some questions about his career to date and here’s what he had to say:

What’s your career journey been to date?

I attended the University of Edinburgh studying politics but after I finished my BA I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.  I’d always considered a career in law so I decided to enrol in the post-graduate entry LLB at Strathclyde University.  Having finished a further four years of studying I then started my legal career at Ellis Whittam (now part of Worknest) and completed my traineeship in 2020 during the height of the pandemic.  After I had completed my traineeship I decided to move to private practice in order to get a more well-rounded experience and, in particular, get involved in more Tribunal work and advocacy which I was able to do at LexLeyton and laterally at Miller Samuel Hill Brown.  I returned to Worknest in 2024 and after moving to North Wales heard about the opportunity to join the Horsfield Menzies team.

What’s been your career highlight?

It’s always hard to pick one thing for a question like that but I’ll always have fond memories of my first full hearing in the employment tribunal where I managed to get an excellent result for my client in a very niche claim (post-employment victimisation).

What excites you about joining Horsfield Menzies?

Horsfield Menzies is a young firm which is going form strength to strength.  It’s really exciting to be part of a new business which has really ambitious goals.  I felt that from the first conversation I had with you that Horsfield Menzies really aligned with my goals and ambition for the future.

What do you like to do when you’re not busy lawyering?

My partner and I have two dogs who keep us pretty busy but otherwise I’ve just spent a lot of time getting to know Chester, Liverpool and now Manchester.  I only moved down in April so I’m still acclimatising to the area and exploring my new surroundings.
